Finding clinical hours can defintely be difficult! We have compiled a non-comprehensive list of clinical and patient care opportunities. Note that this page will continuously be updated with resources.  

Clinical Volunteer Opportunities

NOTE that depending on what type of volunteering you do in the hospital, it may or may not fall under clinical & patient care expereince. Medical Volunteer Opportunities

  • Sharp Hospital

    • Locations: La Mesa (Sharp Grossmont), San Diego (Sharp Memorial and Sharp Mary Birch)

    • Opportunities: Emergency Department, Integrative Healing Therapies, Labor & Delivery, Pharmacy, Maternal Infant Services, Physical Therapy, and more!

    • Requirements: 3-4 hour shifts per week, minimum of 100 hours

  • Scripps

    • Locations: La Jolla, San Diego, Chula Vista, Encinitas

    • Opportunities: Clinical departments, nursing/surgical units, patient escort, and more!​

    • About: Volunteers provide service to patients, families, staff and the community in various positions inside and outside of the hospitals, including the gift shop, information desk and special events. Volunteers may have unique opportunities to work in the nursing units, patient care areas, rehabilitation services, emergency department and more.

  • UC San Diego Health

    • Locations: La Jolla (Jacobs Medical Center, Thornton Pavilion, and Shiley Eye Institute), Hillcrest (UCSD Medical Center)

    • Opportunities: Adult Neuropsychiatric & Behavioral Unit, Burn Unit, Ophthalmology, Optometry, Patient Care Units, Emergency Department, Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, Critical Care Units, and much more!

    • Requirements: Minimum of 100 hours of service over a six to seven month period

    • About: Volunteers support patients and staff in clinical care areas with tasks such as helping with patient transport, errands, stocking, cleaning, lab deliveries and visiting with patients. Other duties can include greeting patients and families, answering visitor questions and helping with wayfinding.

  • UCSD Student-Run Free Clinic​​​

    • Locations: helping patients access low-cost and/or free medications, managing the set-up, closing, and flow of the clinic, inventory and supply ordering, collecting and entering patient data, logging in and labeling patient medications, and Spanish-English translation

  • Pathmaker Internship (Palomar Health)

    • ​​Locations: Escondido (PMC), Poway (PMC–Poway), San Marcos

    • Opportunities: Surgery, Pharmacy, Emergency Department, ICU, Radiology, Birth Center, Behavioral Health, and more!

    • Requirements: One 4-hour shift per week, 240 hours to graduate

  • Rady's Children Hospital (San Diego)

    • Opportunities: Hospital Volunteer (activity room, surgery ambassador, speech, etc.), community auxiliary units, social advocates, and more!
      Requirements: Hospital volunteers are required to commit to 1 year or 100 hours

  • COPE Health Scholar 

    • Locations: (Website) CA (Mission Viejo (closest location to San Diego), Bakersfield, Glendale, Simi Valley, Los Angeles - East, Orange County, Covine, Glendora, West Covina, Newport Beach, Anaheim, Irvine, Riverside - West, Woodland Hills, Los Anglees - South,  Riverside - Downtown, Camarillo and Oxnard, Orange, Selma, Tulare, Reedley, Hanford, Willits and Ukiah, Salinar Valley); HI (Kailua); OR (Portland); WA (Spokane, Seattle, Tacoma General and Allenmore Hospitals, Good Samaritan Hospital)

    • About: Gain firsthand experience in a variety of health care settings, impact patients’ lives, become an integral part of the care delivery team and earn volunteer hours for medical school.
